Coming from Phoenix, we take I-10 East to Exit 257 for Speedway, then a couple of miles east with the university rising on your right around Campbell. We have run that stretch in every kind of traffic, so we can tell before you do whether to stay on Speedway or slip onto a side street.

It sounds simple on paper, and on a quiet weekday it is. On a game Saturday, with tens of thousands pointed at the same exit, the trick is knowing which surface streets move and which ones lock up, and reading that map is a big part of what we do.

More Than Game Days at McKale

Athletics fill the calendar first. Visiting college and high school teams come to face a program with real history, a 1997 national title, and the Lute Olson banners hanging in the rafters at McKale Center at ALKEME Arena, and with them arrive the fans, the band, and the families who follow a season.

Around those game days sit the rest. School classes ride in for a day at the museums and research labs, youth sports clubs land for a tournament or a summer camp, and future Wildcats roll in by the busload before choosing a school.

Free parking close to the center of campus is limited, and event-day spaces near the main athletic venues can disappear early. Campus garages such as Park Avenue and Second Street charge hourly rates, with availability and event-day conditions varying by location. Around Main Gate Square and the university district, city meters carry posted time limits that vary by space, while some nearby streets fall within Park Tucson permit zones. Large groups have another consideration: university bus parking is limited and requires an advance reservation.

• Working to a school or club budget? The Aloft Tucson University is modern, walkable, and right by the Sun Link streetcar line, a straightforward base for a busy few days.
